SCHOOLBOY Teddy Royle really did show installing a village's lifesaving defibrillator was child's play...

Because when his grandfather, Paul Clegg, came to install the equipment in a former phone box, 10-year-old Teddy sprang into action.

Mr Clegg is vice chair of the Dobcross Village Community executive committee who have been at the forefront of ensuring two defibrillators will have secure homes at key points in the village.

He fitted out the red phone in the village square which now has the equipment but Teddy wanted to help at the site of the second defibrillator in the BT box on Ladcastle Road.

And proud Mr Clegg said: "Teddy really did fit it all himself including the fixing of the box to the ply board which he did in my garage before fitting the whole lot in the BT box.

"The only help I gave him was by lifting the box into position while he bolted it on to the back of the phone box.

"In fact, he refused to listen to any suggestions or advice from me once I'd said he could do it all himself.

"And as it happens, he didn't need any advice. He's a very practical lad."

Teddy is a pupil at Diggle Primary School and his delighted mother Sally said: "He's always building things. He gets real pleasure in working on projects.

"Teddy's very positive and independent," she added.

Defibrillators have also been installed at Denshaw Village Hall, The Three Crowns at Scouthead, Uppermill Civic Hall, Tame Valley Tennis and Squash Club in Greenfield, Christ Church Friezland Church Hall, The White Hart, Lydgate, Lido House, Grotton, Lees Library and Delph Library.
