A GENEROUS-spirited film and TV actor is backing the launch of Saddleworth's first ever literary festival.

John Henshaw has taken on the mantle of patron of the two-day festival to be held in Uppermill's Civic Hall, on Saturday and Sunday, October 1 to 2.

The actor, who lives in Grasscroft, is best known for his roles as Ken Dixon the landlord in "Early Doors," Wilf Bradshaw in "Born and Bred" and PC Roy Bramwell in "The Cops."

He also played Labour politician John Prescott, in ITV's highly-acclaimed drama "Confessions of a Diary Secretary".

The festival is the brainchild of self-published children book author Graham Unsworth who writes under the name of Allan Graham.

He has been helped in his quest by Pam Byrne, chair of Saddleworth parish council, who obtained the hire of the hall free of charge and raised money for printing costs.

Marvellous

But by his own Trojan efforts, Mr Unsworth (62) has arranged for authors, poets and literary agents to appear free of charge.

He said: "This allows us to offer this festival to the public with free admission.

"It's wonderful John Henshaw has agreed to be patron of the festival - he's a marvellous man.

"And BBC Radio Manchester presenter, Mike Sweeney, has agreed to be involved too and will be attending a launch on Friday evening, September 30 in the Civic Hall."

Speakers

Mr Unsworth has gained support from Saddleworth School Orchestra and other musicians.

The school's English department is organising a writing competition for the new Year 7's next month, with Leigh Russell, award-winning crime writer, as judge.

Mr Unsworth added: "Its going to be a real community festival.

"As well as the professional writers, we have involved Funky Fitness and Fun of Greenfield, who will be performing a 'Policeman Pete' story.

"During the festival, there are speakers, work groups, book readings, poetry readings, signings and photo opportunities."

Actor John Henshaw declared: "The festival is a terrific idea. It's a little acorn but I'm convinced it will grow and flourish.

"Graham has pulled out all the stops himself to ensure this comes together. It's a real pleasure to support his valiant efforts."
