SCHOOL might be out for summer - but that did not stop children flocking to Hathershaw College for a timetable with a difference.

It was out with maths and English and in with trampolining, archery, human table football and more for the children who took part in a summer school there.

The week-long programme was for students who are starting at the Bellfield Avenue secondary in September, with up to 145 attending each day.

It kicked off with Junk Funk - when pupils used everyday objects such as buckets and ladders to make music - and finished with a barbecue and activities such as zorbing - rolling in an air-filled bubble - and giant Connect 4.

The week included visits by Oldham Rugby League community coach Rob Roberts, the fire service and Mahdlo Youth Centre. The youngsters also enjoyed trips to the Latic zone at Oldham Athletic, GoAir indoor trampolining centre, Eastlands, and the Sky High climbing and indoor adventure centre in Droylsden.

Hathershaw College assistant principal Lorna Philip organised the week and said the children had had "a great week".

She went on: "The children have made new friends, asked millions of questions about secondary school life, met staff in a very relaxed atmosphere - and we've got to know what makes them tick.

"It's also been a great opportunity for our older pupils to be peer mentors to our new year 7 pupils."
