SIX-YEAR-OLD twins Arielle and Georgina Roberts have big smiles on their faces after donating their long locks of blonde and brown hair to a children's charity.
The pair, from Chadderton, decided to have their tresses, which reached down to their knees, cut short in aid of the Little Princess Trust, a charity which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments or other illnesses.
But the charity will be gaining wigs of two different hair colours from the non-identical twins, due to a one-in-a-million genetic quirk which means they each inherited different genes from their mother Karron, who is mixed race and carries the code for both dark and white skin.
Surprised
Arielle inherited the darker gene, giving her brown hair, while Georgina has a different genetic code giving her blonde hair and blue eyes.
Mum, Karron, 40, said: "People are often surprised when I tell them that Arielle and Georgina are twins, but when you look closely at them you can see the similarities.
"They have very individual personalities as well, but they both decided that they wanted to do something to help children who are ill."
The girls were inspired to donate their hair to the charity after a hearing that a boy in their school had been diagnosed with leukaemia and would be having treatment.
Karron added: "They have been thinking about having their hair cut for a while but they wanted to do something good with it if they could, as their hair is so long.
"Donating it to a charity which helps children seems like a fantastic idea. I am a very proud mum."
The twins had their hair cut at Solace hair salon at Middleton Road and proudly showed off their new haircut and plaits.
They have also being raising money for the charity in order to have their hair transformed into wigs, with a target of £350.
Their school, Mills Hill Primary, have also been impressed with their kind-hearted actions.
Head teacher Ian Mason said: "At Mills Hill, we strive to encourage an enquiring mind and a caring heart."
"It's fantastic to see two of our girls, Georgina and Arielle, who are prepared to go the extra mile to raise funds to help this worthy cause and to provide wigs for children who have suffered from cancer."
