SUMMER school launch . . . Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon
OLDHAM West and Royton MP Jim McMahon is launching a new summer school to give young people practical, on the job experiences of skilled trades.
The former leader of Oldham Council is working in partnership with Oldham College, North Chadderton School and The Radclyffe School to deliver a structured programme of training and on the job experience in a range of skilled trades such as electrical and mechanical, heating and plumbing, motor trades as well as some construction placements.
The initiative has secured placements for North Chadderton School and The Radclyffe School pupils at some of the borough's largest employers including First Choice Homes, Emanuel Whittaker, OMC Ford and others.
Mr McMahon told the Chronicle: "Employment in trade professions give skills and training which society needs.
"They are the backbone of our country and provide a good standard of living for those working in those industries, offering a medium salary of £28,000 a year.
"Higher level qualified positions such as electrical engineers can earn up to £45,000."
He added: "The country faces a crisis if we are not able to train the next generation and employers report a skills gap of 42 per cent, where they fail to fill vacancies because those applying simply do not have the skills and qualifications needed."
Taking place between July 18 and 29, the summer school will consist of a one-day introduction, eight days placement in a work environment and one-day team and confidence building.
There will be a fund in place for those on low incomes to meet the cost of meals and travel where needed.
Any specialist clothing will also be provided.
Mr McMahon thanked sponsors who have made this programme possible who include Oldham College, North Chadderton School, The Radclyffe School, Oldham Enterprise Trust, Positive Steps and the GMB Trade Union.
It is hoped it will be rolled out to more schools next year.
