IT APPEARS that town music legend Morgan Fletcher has almost had enough of playing the live scene and is preparing to call it a day.

After four decades or more of wowing enthusiastic crowds in Oldham, Morgan, whose 'Every Which Way' band were massive in their 1980s heyday, took to Facebook to reveal his retirement plans.

The cover version specialist, whose electric performances will undoubtedly be missed when he does hang up his microphone, said: "I'm going to call it a draw at the end of this year.

"I will do some gigs with a scratch band now and again, but as far as banging out songs three of four nights a week is concerned, I'm done.

"I've had a cracking forty-odd years at it and I can still do a bit, but I think the time comes when you say to yourself, 'enough is enough'.

"Thanks to everyone for your support and love, and keep the live gigs going, there's a lot of good young talent out there."

There has certainly been an outpouring of support for Saddleworth-based Morgan (64) in the days since his announcement.

His Facebook page has been packed with messages posted by his devoted fans - of which there are many.

"Oldham's number one retiring. Legendary. Morgan, you're leaving very big shoes to fill," said Chris Jennings.

Julie Jones said: "Fab memories of Sheddings and the good old days (a reference to Morgan's popular residency at the now bulldozed Watersheddings-based nightclub in the 80s).

"Morgan and your brother Craig are still the best in town."

Andy Layton James said: "Legend. I'm so grateful for the expertise, advice and break you gave me in Tenerife all those years ago. Rest bud, relax and enjoy."

"Morgan, you're an inspiration. The best," said Darren Harper.

Whether there will be some kind of farewell gig or tribute to Morgan's efforts towards the end of the year remains to be seen, but in the meantime, keep an eye on his music page in the near future for recollections from the man himself.
