We're going downhill

FED-UP Latics fans marched down Sheepfoot Lane to SportsDirect.com Park yesterday in response to manager John Sheridan's shock exit.

A small group of supporters made their way to the stadium at 4pm, frustrated at how Sheridan was allowed to move to Sky Bet League Two Notts County.

The 51-year-old's departure comes only five months after the club legend returned for a second spell in charge and led the struggling League One side - seemingly doomed to relegation - to safety against all the odds.

Latics fanatic Aaron West (28) said the aim of the protest, which set off from the Old Grey Mare on Rochdale Road, was to get Latics bosses to take more of an interest in the actual football side of the club.

He created a Facebook page nine months ago to share the frustrations he had of the club and the way it was being managed. On Friday morning the page had grown from 100 "likes" to almost 900 by Saturday.

Aaron said: "We worry that the other parts of the business are the priority, rather than the football. We're just not happy.

"We can't keep hold of a manager for more than six months. We're shouting but no-one's listening. It's time for chairman Simon Corney to change his ways. We're sick and tired and fed up."

"The manager has left for a team in the league below. We want Oldham Athletic to be successful. We want the attitude to change towards the football side. We want them to be more honest with the fans. If we are in trouble, don't lie to us.

"With John Sheridan, everybody had great optimism. Everyone ended the season on a high. Then within a couple of weeks the manager has left.

Fellow Latics fan Shaun Jackson (47) agreed with those sentiments.

He said: "Sheridan had affinity with the club, he had been here before. No-one knows why he's left. It's a mystery. The club says one thing, he says another. One minute they say he's not leaving, the day after they're saying we've had approaches. Which is the truth? Enough is enough. This is the final nail in the coffin."
