GREATER Manchester’s Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd is urging victims of stalking and harassment to speak out and seek help.

Tony Lloyd made the call as part of National Stalking Awareness Week, which was launched by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to raise awareness of stalking and harassment and encourage police officers and practitioners working with stalking victims to have a better understanding of the law and how they can use it.

One in five women and one in 12 British men have experienced stalking in their lifetime and it is vastly underreported. Research by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, suggests that only a small proportion of stalking cases are recorded by the police.

Mr Lloyd said: “Stalking is often seen as something that only happens to celebrities, but the reality is there are too many people suffering this type of control and abuse, and it has a devastating impact on their lives. It’s important that we get the message across that help is available and the police will take reports of stalking seriously. This week is an opportunity to shine a light on this crime and instil confidence in victims to speak out and get the help and support they need.”

Responding to calls for better training for police officers and specialist support services for victims of stalking and harassment, Mr Lloyd added: “I support the National Stalking Consortium’s call to improve services for victims as more needs to be done to ensure the needs of victims come first every time. In my role as Victims’ Commissioner I am currently working with GMP to get a better picture of stalking and harassment across Greater Manchester to help me ensure the appropriate support services are in place.

“If you have been a victim of stalking you can help shape local victims’ services by sharing your experience with me at www.gmvictims.org.uk/Experiences, where you can also find help and support in your area.”
