A MOTHER’s death two days after giving birth was due to sudden adult death syndrome (SADS) a coroner provisionally concluded.

Lisa Parkisson aged 35, from Derker, died at Royal Oldham Hospital on June 23, 2014, after giving birth to baby Zac — her first child.

Although the hospital was found to have shown shortcomings in the way it observed and documented Lisa’s condition post Caesarian section, this did not lead to her death but did raise concerns about the level of care she received.

Lisa had thrombocytopenia — a disorder in which the blood has a low number of platelets, however it was not considered a major concern. Although it didn’t cause Lisa’s death, the family felt that better care should have been shown.

Coroner Lisa Hasmi said: “I am giving a provisional verdict of natural death from sudden adult death syndrome post Caesarian section.

“There have been a number of problems and concerns raised.

“It shouldn’t have happened and there are a lot of things that could have been done but did not necessarily touch upon the cause of death.

“I find it hard to put into words the journey you have travelled over the last 22 months and I really do hope that with time that pain eases.”

Guidelines involving procedures have been put in place including methods to ensure staff are better trained, responsive, effective and well led.

Ms Caroline Rice, a consultant at the Pennine Acute Hospital Trust said: “The serious incident outlined a number of failings and has outlined steps to address them.

“I don’t feel that any of the issues that we have identified would, sadly, have made any difference to the outcome.

“The family will have a lot of questions which I suspect won’t be answered today due to the nature of the court.

“I am very happy when I get back to the trust to get in touch with somebody senior and I will ask them to get in touch.

“I will get it in the system and someone in the trust will get in contact with you and we will try to take those questions forward.”

The inquest is yet to be formally concluded.
