Mystery appeal for stage stars

Date published: 20 April 2016

WANTED: Young men aged 16 to 41.

That's the curious ad Oldham Coliseum have put out, making a mysterious appeal for male volunteer performers to take part in marking "a major moment in national history".

The hush hush plea for teenagers (school leavers only) and men, known only as "Project Octagon", says they're required to take part in a major theatrical event this summer - described as comparable to London’s 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony - and they need to be "dedicated and enthusiastic" .

It says: "Everyone taking part has been asked to keep the details a secret. Alongside hundreds of other people up and down the country, you’ll be taking part in a performance that will mark a major moment in national history. "

The covert project involves theatres from England, Scotland and Wales and will be led by the National Theatre.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a monumental large-scale event, directed by an award-winning team," it adds.

To take part you have to be available on a host of dates and times in May, June and July and have a good level of physical fitness. There will also be workshops held at the coliseum on Sunday. (April 24)

Roles require no previous acting experience, however you will need to be comfortable performing in a public space.

Travel expenses and others will be covered for participants.

There will be a selection process for the project.
