AN OLDHAM pensioner picked up a Senior Resident Award from Great Places Housing Group because of her contributions to the community.

Dorothy Sweatman (81) of Crossley, Oldham was one of 150 Great Places residents to attend the Community Star Awards ceremony on April 9 at Gorton Monastery.

Dorothy won the award because despite facing health issues she did voluntary work at tenant's meetings as well as working with Great Places - one of the largest housing associations in the north of England - to introduce recycling for 177 residents.

The Community Stars Awards is a chance for Great Places to acknowledge the residents achievements on a personal level and for their communities.

Amjad Khan, Great Places' Oldham neighbourhood officer, said: "She is such a joy to work with - every state should have a Dorothy!"

Three other residents in Oldham took home Highly Commended accolades at the ceremony, including Caroline Maloney, Amina Stihi and Sonal Mistry from Chadderton.

Matthew Harrison, chief executive at Great Places, said: "We received a record 120 nominations for this year's award and the personal stories and community achievements submitted remained as remarkable as ever.

"These are the unsung heroes of our communities and Great Places in honoured to be able to help showcase and celebrate their achievements."
