Sweet success for pupils

PUPILS got to show off their cooking skills when a celebrity chef visited their school to judge a bake off.

Children at St Mary’s High Crompton Primary School baked their own cakes to be judged by Andrew Nutter.

The cakes were put on show during a coffee morning, to which parents were invited.

The funds raised from the event will go to the Shaw school's parents’ support group, which will use the money for projects to enhance the children's learning environment.

Head teacher Pamela Hartley said: "The money from the bake off will go to the support group, which is currently developing our outdoor area.

"The children were very involved and they got to bake a cake of their choice. Their reaction has been really fantastic and all age groups have taken part. It's a great event that they can all work together in.

"We invited the parents to come in after the bake off for a coffee morning. "

Ms Hartley was delighted with the reaction of chef Andrew, from Rochdale, who was invited to the bake off by a member of the support group via Twitter.

She said: "The ‘Great British Bake Off’ is so big and this is something that all ages can do.

"Andrew was particularly taken with the cakes that had British themes, they were the ones that caught his eye.

"It was really great that he attended, one of the parents support group contacted him via Twitter and I suppose if you don't ask you don't get.

"He was really lovely with the children and he spent loads of time with them. He has also donated a signed cook book to the group’s raffle."

The school hopes to to stage another bake off event and is looking forward to more events in the future, with fashion shows and a casino night planned for the summer term.

Ms Hartley added: "As a thank-you to all the parents they have paid for a circus to come to the school and it is nice that they show acknowledgement."
