Fight goes on to save club

A volunteer team is hoping to keep a Saddleworth village club open.
Councillor Nicola Kirkham, an independent on Oldham Council and Saddleworth Parish Council, came up with the idea of a voluntary management team at a meeting over the future of the Delph Club.
Warnings over the club’s future were revealed by the club’s committee in December with a plea for support to keep the Gartside Street venue in operation.
There was little response, and with the club tipping towards closure, Councillor Kirkham and villagers Gillian Buckley and Mike Leighton suggested a voluntary team to take charge.
She said: “The team would run the club voluntarily for six months with the help of members and the community, to see if we could get it back on its feet.
“As a councillor, I offered support and advised on legalities including licensing and funding. And I offered my help as a local community member in bar work, cleaning and book keeping. After six months, we would review the structure of running the club.
“The general feeling within the community is we do not want to see this fantastic venue close ,but we need volunteers to help.”
