EXPLOSIONS which killed 34 people and injured dozens more in Brussels yesterday have been described as “appalling” and “horrendous” by North-West MEP Paul Nuttall.

Zaventem International airport was rocked by two blasts while another explosion hit the Maelbeek metro station in the city centre, close to European Union Institutions, shortly after 8am local time.

Mr Nuttall, speaking from the European Parliament building in the city, said: “This is an appalling attack, killing and maiming innocent people going about their business. My heart goes out to the victims and their families and I hope those involved, directly and indirectly, in causing this horrendous incident are quickly brought to justice.”

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Greater Manchester interim mayor and police and crime commissioner Tony Lloyd said: “The terrible events in Brussels will shock and outrage people around the world.

“Our thoughts are with the people of Belgium, alongside a determination that those who would seek to sow discord and fear through death and destruction will never win.”

Chief Constable Ian Hopkins added his condolences to everyone affected by the terrorist attack.

He said: “It’s a reminder to us all of the need to be vigilant. I would urge people to report anything suspicious to the police.”

People who are due to travel should contact their airline or travel company for information about travel to and from Brussels.
