United in support of special children

FOOTBALL legend Sir Bobby Charlton brought a smile to many faces at Kingfisher Community Special School on Friday.

The former Manchester United and England star was greeted with cheers and applause when he launched a partnership between the Chadderton school and the Manchester United Foundation. The foundation uses football to inspire young people to build a better life. Kingfisher has been a foundation partner school since last September, but Friday was the official launch of the partnership.

The school caters for children with complex and severe learning needs, who presented a piece of art in UNited colours to Sir Bobby, as well as flowers for his wife, Lady Norma.

Stephen Harcourt, from the foundation, also works within Kingfisher in partnership with the school staff to develop learning sessions aimed at developing children’s physical and well-being skills.

John Shield, chief executive of the foundation, said: “We wanted to have a launch with substance today for the children. We intend to continue helping the kids here.

Headteacher Anne Redmond added: “We are delighted to welcome Sir Bobby and Lady Norma. It’s a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop their wellbeing.”
