A total of 4,730 Oldhamers were on Universal Credit or Jobseekers’ Allowance. The increase was largely due to seasonal jobs ending in January.

In the North-West, unemployment fell by 19,000 to 174,000 from October to December.

Julie Wills of Jobcentre Plus said: “With opportunities coming in Oldham we should start to see a better picture next month.
