WORKSHOPS designed to boost young people’s vocational skills have been officially opened by new Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon.

The new “Skills Zone” at the Positive Steps centre in Oldham’s Union Street is aimed at young people in need of work, education or training. Activities include woodwork and metalwork, cycle repairs, high-tech 3D modelling equipment and creative design.

The zone is in refurbished rooms at Positive Steps, which offers advice on how people can get into work, make career moves or support their children’s progress. Positive Steps also works with employers, schools and other organisations to fill vacancies, take on apprenticeships or buy services.

Former Oldham Council leader Mr McMahon met youngsters, staff and volunteers during his visit. The organisation’s chief executive Steph Bolshaw then helped Mr McMahon perform the opening ceremony - using a saw to cut a ribbon rather than scissors.

The Skills Zone is currently used every week by about 50 young carers, who look after parents or siblings, and around 20 young offenders. The majority are referred by other organisations, such as health services or the Prince’s Trust.
