Stretton: The work goes on

Jean Stretton is officially Oldham’s first female council leader — and couldn’t be clearer that “the work goes on”.

The Hollinwood councillor’s selection was unanimously approved at an extraordinary meeting of full council last night. She replaces Jim McMahon, who is stepping aside after being elected as as MP.

Councillor Stretton (57), deputy council leader since June 2014, beat fellow Councillor Arooj Shah to the party leadership, then won a vote by the 43 Labour councillors to become council leader.

Accepting the nominations in a powerful speech, Councillor Stretton praised the work of Mr McMahon’s administration and pledged Oldham’s improvement journey would continue.

She highlighted current regeneration projects such as the transformation of the old town hall as symbolising “so much about how we are moving and getting our priorities right”.

She also spoke about the need to focus on social regeneration, pledging to do what it takes to implement the recommendations of the recent Oldham Education and Skills Commission.

“I am an Oldhamer born and bred. I want what’s best for this town, for its people and for our young people growing up,” she said. “I’m not afraid of hard work and I’m not afraid of a challenge.”

Mr McMahon, who remains a councillor for Failsworth East, said: “I’m delighted, proud and emotional to be moving Jean Stretton as the new council leader. Jean, you will be a fantastic leader of Oldham Council, you are proper Oldham.

“If you ever need me, you know where I am.”
