HUNDREDS of petrolheads were moved on by police at a car meet in Oldham after claims drivers were jumping red lights, speeding and revving their engines.

Hundreds of car enthusiasts are believed to have filled the downstairs car park of the Tesco supermarket on Huddersfield Road in an organised car meet or cruise. Locals claim they saw drivers jump red lights and drive at up to 80mph.

One local witness said: “They were in the car park, revving cars, backfiring, speeding up and down Huddersfield Road, some with no lights on and performing U turns where they aren’t permitted.

“Some of them were reaching around 80mph on Huddersfield Road. There are elderly people living in flats nearby and the noise was ridiculous. Me and my friend were in a pub across the road and had to leave because it was so loud.”

It is believed the car meet was initially in the Alexandra Retail Park car park from around 7pm on Sunday, but police blocked the road and moved everyone on - leaving the group to congregate at Tesco. They dispersed around 11pm

Passer-by Diane Travers said: “There were cars jumping red lights, speeding, racing, doing U turns. There was shouting, and horns sounding. Not a thought for the other vehicles on the road. Every road regulation was broken.

One of the group, Adam Beard, defended the car meet but admitted not condoing some of the behaviour.

“What’s the difference between this and a group meeting up in a pub?” he said. “Yes there’s a small number who mess around, but most are sensible car enthusiasts. It’s like saying all football fans are alcoholics who like fighting.

“And it’s Tesco’s car park, but the people involved with this have asked the police to help find a place for them, with no success.

“We don’t condone what happened on the road but the meet started at Matalan - everyone had arrived and was contained in one spot. Moving everyone meant 200 cars looking for the next car park.”

Police made no arrests
