Seatbelt reminder after tragic crash

A CORONER has urged parents to properly fasten children’s seatbelts after the death of a little girl in a road crash.

Aleeza Ahmed (6), from Oldham, had been in a booster seat but without a seatbelt and was thrown from a car at Crookilley Way, Bredbury near the M60, an inquest heard.

The Vauxhall Astra driven by her father Ahmed Hussain slid on a bend, hit a steep kerb and flipped over as it crossed the central reservation, landing upside down on a car coming the other way.

He has no recollection of the incident but said he always strapped his daughter in safely.

The court heard that following the accident, 89 commenters on social media claimed to have lost control on the same stretch of road.

In recording Aleeza’s death as an accident, Stockport coroner John Pollard said he would write to Stockport Council asking for a crash barrier between the carriageways and for the kerbs to be examined as their large size had helped to flip the car into the air.

The road wasn’t defective, but the council has since installed a high-grip surface.

Mr Pollard said: “A contributor to the severity of her injuries undoubtedly came from that she was not properly belted in. I would urge very, very strongly parents of young children to always ensure they are in proper fitted child seats.”

Mr Ahmed, of Cleeve Road, and his wife, Sobia Sultana, were both seriously hurt in the crash last July.

Speaking after the hearing he said: “Because I can’t remember it makes things very difficult. I can’t imagine driving without her having a belt on. My priority is always my child.

“Aleeza always had a smile on her face. She was a princess, a fantastic daughter.”
