Roy just keeps on giving

THE daughters of Shaw’s former Secret Santa believe he may have sent one final gift from beyond the grave - a trip to get the family together at Christmas.

Karen Kirkpatrick and sister Debbie Morris were greeted by a TV crew when they landed in Australia after their cousin’s wife, Lenore, won a competition to fly her family over for Christmas.

Lenore wrote on her entry form for Qantas Airlines’ “Feels Like Home” contest that she wanted to be able to give her cousin a big hug after Karen’s father Roy died in January.

She wrote about Roy Taylor, who for more than 10 years was known for handing out £10 notes in secret to Oldham’s delighted shoppers at Christmas .

The kind hearted great-grandfather, who gave away thousands of pounds of his own savings and raised an equal amount for charity, lost his battle with cancer aged 66.

Karen and Debbie arrived in Sydney on Monday and are staying with their uncle Allan and his four children. Mum Denise (66) booked her own ticket on the same flight to surprise her brother.

They were all greeted by their family and interviewed for Aussie breakfast show “Today” as soon as they landed.

Karen (42), from Chadderton, said: “Mum wasn’t looking forward to her birthday this year because it’s her first without dad. We think maybe dad sent this as a bit of a cheer-up present. He always gave to others. We’re looking forward to Christmas now. This has completely changed our outlook

“It’s down to him, however you see it. He did his Secret Santa thing — and that’s what my cousin wrote about in her entry.”
