Pupil scoops prize in enterprise challenge

A Crompton House School pupil has been voted outstanding individual in a manufacturing challenge.

Romario Crooks (14) unanimously caught the judges’ eye with his leadership, team work and innovation during the McBride “Make It Enterprising” challenge, which saw the Shaw school take on six other Greater Manchester schools.

The event challenged 13 and 14 year olds to set up mini-manufacturing businesses and design, build and market a new “MultiLiquid” cleaning product and dispenser for a specific customer group of their choosing.

It was part of a series of themed challenges that Manchester-based charity the Manufacturing Institute is supporting through a “Make It” campaign, which aims to attract the brightest and best new talent into manufacturing.

Teams were challenged to develop a brand for their company before offering ideas in a Dragons’ Den-style presentation to managers at manufacturing company McBride.

Stephanie Boyle, who runs the Make It challenges, said: “We had a great day with all the schools and I’m delighted Romario was rewarded for his hard work. He shone during the challenge.”
