A NEW Bavarian-style Bierkeller opens in Oldham this weekend to bring festive oompah to the town’s nightlife.

A £250,000 refurbishment of the Tokyo Project nightclub on Roscoe Street has created Oldham’s first German Bierkeller on the ground floor.

The venture will create 40 new jobs and aims to bring some much-needed fun for the over-30s back into the town centre. Doors open to the public tomorrow, following tonight’s VIP preview event.

The new venue is an authentic Bavarian beer hall, complete with oompah bands and legendary two-pint steins, with over a dozen different draught beers plus a selection of 50 world bottled and craft beers. There will also be stein cocktails and a wide range of spirits and wines.

The Bierkeller will be open every Friday and Saturday from 5pm, creating a new after-work meeting place.

The development has been carried out by Tokyo Industries who own and run 32 bars and nightclubs across the UK.

Oldham-born managing director Aaron Mellor said: “This development is particularly close to my heart. Before we even purchased the original venue in 1997, we’d run club nights here. I recall an unknown Peter Kay doing stand-up to about seven people when we first opened.

“There’s a real feeling that we need to get some entertainment back in town, without having to head into Manchester — something really local. The Bierkeller concept seems to have taken off in a big way across the country and I wanted to bring a bit of that to Oldham.”
