UKIP leader Nigel Farage is bidding to cause a major by-election shock in Oldham West and Royton with a message to voters to “get control of our country”.
Farage met shoppers and stall holders on Tommyfield Market as he campaigned with his party’s candidate, John Bickley. The two later met students and Oldham College.
Though Labour has a majority of more than 14,000 in Oldham West and Royton, the odds have been falling on a win for UKIP, whose vote increased by 17 per cent in May’s general election.
Mr Farage said there was a “base” for UKIP in the area and that traditional Labour voters were turning their back on the party.
He added: “Controlling immigration is a very big issue — security worries, worries about borders, worries about ISIS. There’s a feeling among old Labour voters that somehow Jeremy Corbyn does not represent what they want from a Labour Party.”
