WORK has begun on a new £7.5million school in Coldhurst.
The sponsored primary academy, which will be run by the Harmony Trust, is set to open in September, 2016.
The school is being built on the site of the former Grange School, on Rochdale Road.
Council leader Jim McMahon said: “This is fantastic news not only for local parents and families but also for Oldham as a whole because, with an expanding population and new homes being built, it’s crucial we have facilities of this quality offering sufficient places for all our children.

“Thanks to the Oldham Education and Skills Commission we have high hopes for every young person, so making sure we provide the best educational environment where they can learn is essential.”
Harmony chief executive Sandy Dixie said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the new academy in Coldhurst.
“The trust has significant experience in the effective running of primary schools and currently has four academies in Oldham.
“Our core aim is to provide the best possible education for our children. We believe that school should be a place where every child achieves and succeeds.”
Oldham, like other towns across the country, is experiencing a rise in the number of children needing primary school places.
Research suggests there will be a demand for an extra 140 places in Oldham by 2017/18.
