FAILSWORTH runner Nathan Kilcourse only decided to enter the Milltown to Moors Half Marathon at the last minute.

But his decision certainly paid off: he romped home in first place over the 13 miles.

The 25 year old has always been a keen runner but had to put his hobby on hold when he was diagnosed with diabetes. Two years ago he started to enter races again.

Last Sunday he came second in the Yorkshire Marathon so was delighted to go one better yesterday.

Nathan, who represents Salford Harriers, said: “It was touch and go whether I competed as I’ve not been well all week. I only decided to enter at the last minute so I’m really happy to have won.”

Hayley Kuter, also of Salford Harriers, was the first woman across the finish line. The 37-year-old was sixth overall.

She said: “I live in Manchester but I knew this course was hilly so I’ve been doing a lot of hill training and it definitely paid off. It was a really good course, I enjoyed it.

“I’ve been running for 10 years and I’ve taken part in a lot of events but it’s always nice to win.”

The gruelling race, which started and finished in High Street in the town centre, saw runners tackle the hills of Moorside and Saddleworth before heading back via Lees and Glodwick.

The half marathon followed 7k and 10k races earlier this year as well as a special triathlon. Visit www.milltownraces.co.uk for details of future events.
