LOCAL volunteers helping Syrian refugees say they have been overwhelmed by Oldham’s support.
The Glodwick-based Greengate Trust, which is behind a refugee relief effort in Greece, has raised £15,000 in the last few days through social media alone.
The trust’s Imran Yousaf said four members flew to Athens last week with some of the money, to buy food packs. They have also been to local cash-and-carry stores for donations - and have received water, dates and other items, including clothes and tents.
“After visiting Calais we thought about how there are thousands of Syrian refugees who need help in Greece and other places,” said Imran. “The response to our appeal has been terrific.”
Oldham Council has pledged to continue to offer support in whatever practical way it can, in response to the plight of those fleeing civil war.
Shaakir Chowdhury, who runs the Dome indoor football centre in Arkwright Street, Chadderton, has opened his building as a drop-off point for donations. Well-wishers from as far as Liverpool have turned up with goods.
A 40ft container packed with essentials left for Greece last week. Shaakir (21) said: “Some workplaces are giving £1 or £5 for each member of staff a week. We even have doll’s houses. I know they won’t be of much use but at least they will bring some happiness to the children.
“Everyone knows about the situation. These people have nothing at all.
“If everyone can get on board, a little town like Oldham can make a big difference.”
Also heading off to Greece is Friarmere cricketer Wasim Imtiaz. Wasim sacrificed family time during the Muslim festival of Eid last week to fly with nine others as part of Oldham’s Aid 4 Refugees group.
With £1,000 they will buy essentials for refugees close to the Macedonian border.
