A DEVOTION to fund-raising for good causes has secured Joan Halkyard the coveted title of Woman of Oldham.

Stunned Mrs Halkyard was speechless as she accepted the Oldham Chronicle Rosebowl and bouquet in front of more than 200 women at the White Hart Inn, Lydgate, yesterday.

Mrs Halkyard has been a member of Saddleworth Ladies Lifeboat Guild since 1993, and chairman since 2008. Two years ago she was presented with a bronze badge and certificate at the annual Royal National Lifeboat Institution luncheon at the White Hart for her unstinting fund-raising efforts.

Mrs Halkyard, from Greenfield, said: “I can’t believe it. I’m totally stunned. It never entered my head that I would even be nominated.

“I don’t think I’ve done anything outstanding, I just do what people would do if they had time to do it.

“I’ve enjoyed what I have done and I have enjoyed working with the people I work with. I’m appreciative of all the support.”

Mrs Halkyard’s dedication to good causes has also seen her help Oldham Deaf Society and Dr Kershaw’s Hospice over the years. She also served on the Oldham NHS Trust board.

Norma Beverley, chair of the Woman of Oldham committee, said: “We read all the nominations and Joan stood out a mile — she deserves it. She works very hard for a lot of people in Oldham.”

Now in its 23rd year, the event recognises unsung heroes who work hard behind the scenes. It has also raised more than £100,000 for charity since it started.
