Gallery’s display of freedom

Date published: 22 September 2015

THE fascinating story of the British Anti-Apartheid Movement will be the focus of a touring exhibition arriving in Oldham on Saturday.

Forward to Freedom focuses on campaigns to support the people of South Africa. Gallery Oldham and Oldham Archives and Local Studies has a large collection of material relating to the local campaign and the exhibition also features banners and leaflets from the Oldham branch of the Anti-Apartheid Movement.

In 1959, the Boycott Movement called for a boycott of South African produce. It grew into a movement of hundreds of thousands, campaigning for sanctions against South Africa and the release of Nelson Mandela. The exhibition is part of an education project set up by the Anti-Apartheid Archives Committee. The exhibition runs until October 24.
