Villagers have been thanked for donations of hundreds of items to support refugees from war-torn Syria.
Denshaw Community Association organised a collection of clothing, camping gear, bedding, footwear and other items. And the great response led Alan Roughley, association chairman and former Saddleworth parish councillor, to declare: “Our village hall was available and it happened we had one of the regular film nights during the evening. We hoped for a reasonable response but were surprised at the large number of people who turned up. People have dug deep and we received everything from a portable toilet tent to nappies.
“All the items are now on the way across Europe to the Syrian border as part of the weekly shipment from the whole of Greater Manchester. We would like to thank all those who helped to make it as easy as possible at the other end.”
The Saddleworth WI has been inundated with donations after holding collection events for items to send to Calais.
