Popular PC: ‘It’s been an honour’

A POLICE chief has praised one of her retiring community officers as a “proper copper.”

Caroline Ball, GMP’s Oldham Divisional commander, joined wellwishers in adding her good wishes to PC Dave Pickles, who has retired after 30 years in the force.

The unassuming father of two has been a familiar face in Saddleworth South for 12 years, and colleagues and friends gave him a surprise send-off on his last day at Uppermill police station.

Earlier, Chief Superintendent Ball, who has worked with PC Pickles for eight years, said proudly: “Dave will always do what he says he will do and I have found he will always tell me what is really going on, rather than telling me what I want to hear. I’m sure people of Saddleworth South will join me in wishing Dave a very happy retirement.”

Dave, a governor at Greenfield Primary School, met his wife Beverly — herself a former police officer — while they were both on duty covering Oldham Athletic. She said proudly: “He is a quiet man and family is his all. He has seen many changes in the job but has always been consistent, reliable and conscientious.”

In retirement Dave is hoping to visit his son Matthew, who moved to New Zealand three years ago.

Speaking at his leaving party Dave said: “It’s been an honour to work up here. I have really enjoyed working with the community.”
