Janet’s in the nation’s top 50 elite!

OLDHAM lifeguard Janet Appleyard has made a splash after being honoured as one of Britain’s best mature workers.

Janet came seventh in the prestigious People Management magazine’s “top 50 over 50” worker awards - which also included names like Professor Stephen Hawking as well as a lord, a dame, several doctors, a surgeon, a barrister and campaign champions. The awards are voted by the public.

Janet a sports centre team leader for Oldham Community Leisure joked: “I am in with the elite! I was amazed to feature in the list at all.”

The 61 year old has worked for Oldham Community Leisure for 24 years, originally as a cleaner. Then she conquered her fear of water and learned to swim, eventually becoming a lifeguard.

Janet said: “I just love the leisure industry. I’ve always had that something inside that sys if I want something, I go for it.”

Janet is also a qualified gym instructor, a trampoline coach and an excellent ice skater.

The award judges were impressed by Janet’s motivation. Judge Chris Ball from employment charity the Shaw Trust, said: “We believe these people represent the very best of what older employees have to offer the modern workplace.”

Louise McGreal, who is head of human resources for OCL, said: “Janet is an ambassador for our company and a great example of what can be achieved with hard work and commitment. She’s done exceptionally well to make the top 10 and should be very proud.”
