A DETERMINED A-level student is celebrating gaining top A* grades in his exams, despite spending an entire year in recovery after contracting TB.

Mohammed Raza Ali — Raza to his pals, battled back to health and returned to Oldham Sixth Form College a year later with a renewed drive to become a doctor himself.

His hard work paid off and Raza, from Glodwick, gained A* passes in chemistry, biology, maths and further maths - plus an A in physics - enabling him to study medicine at Manchester University later this year.

The 19 year old said: “I was studying in my first year at college when I got TB. I was very ill and had to spend weeks in hospital before being able to return home. Even then I wasn’t well enough to go to school and I spent months recovering at home.

“But I was determined not to have wasted the year and continued studying with my maths A-level during that time.”

He returned to college to pick up his studies and build on the impressive start he had made.

He said: “I started again at the Sixth Form College and worked hard on my other subjects to make sure I got the grades I needed for medicine. It’s been hard work but I am very happy with my results.

“I’ve wanted to be a doctor for a while but being in hospital made me even more determined to study medicine. I’m glad I will have the chance to do that now.”
