Oldham students raise A-level bar

Date published: 14 August 2015

Oldham students’ A-level results are higher than the national average.

The provisional overall pass rate from A-E was 98.4 per cent – 0.3 per cent higher than the national figure. The figure matches last year’s Oldham performance.

Nationally the number of A-level students progressing to university has increased this year -an increase expected to be seen in Oldham.

Councillor Shoab Akhtar, cabinet member for education and skills, said: “We’re pleased with the overall pass rate. Improving education and ensuring every young person has the best opportunity to succeed is a top priority for the council and its partners. Whether that means university or into employment, it is vital they have the skills and support available.

Kevin Courtney, deputy general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said: “The results for A and AS-Levels reflect the hard work of students and their teachers.

“Many young people will rightly be celebrating their achievements and considering their options for the future, and nothing should detract from that.

“In celebrating success we should also note that schools and colleges are facing substantial real-term funding cuts for post-16 education, and it is vital those cuts are reversed to ensure future students are not disadvantaged, and are able to achieve their potential.”
