Lightning transformation from scrap to stage

IF cars could dream surely is would be every Nissan Micra’s deepest desire to drive off into the sunset as Danny Zuko’s iconic Ford De Luxe from the movie “Grease”.

Well for Annette Gatley’s much-loved motor that’s exactly what has happened.

A series of incredible coincidences means that instead of Annette’s 17-year-old Micra heading to the scrapyard, it has being given a new lease of life as the star car in a production of “Grease” at the Oldham Coliseum.

Saddleworth Drama Centre put out the call for a car prop for its musical medley production, which includes an excerpt from “Grease”.

Student Lennah Richardson’s garage-owning grandfather, Jack Marland knew her Micra was on its last legs but that she would be sad to see it go - so transformed the mini into a lean, mean machine, which will now be the focus of the “Greased Lightning” number during the show on July 16 and 17.

Jack said: “When I heard they needed a car I foolishly said we’ll make something!”

Jack knew Annette’s MIcra was due to be scrapped so asked if she would mind them turning it into a stage prop.

“She thought it was a brilliant idea,” said Jack. Now it’s basically a rolling shell we’ve sprayed black like in the film. It’s been a really enjoyable thing to do, and Annette is thrilled.”

Jack’s finishing touch is sure to have Annette, from Clarksfield, crying in the aisles on the night.

“When she came to have a look she asked if she could have the Nissan badge from the bonnet as a memento,” said Jack. “To replace it we’re going to put ‘Annette’ in tribute.”

Annette said: “I think it’s a brilliant idea. It seems daft getting upset over a lump of metal but it has served us well. It will be a bit emotional for me to see it on stage.”

Well-known TV actress Judith Barker, who runs Saddleworth Drama Centre, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic Jack has been able to do this for us - and so lovely of Annette to allow us to have her much-loved car.
