Hit-and-run taxi driver fined £200

A CABBIE’s hit-and-run incident left a man badly injured, Oldham Magistrates heard.

Mohammed Rashid (38), of Radnor Street, Oldham, pleaded guilty to failing to stop after an accident on Waterloo Street, Oldham in the early hours of March 8.

James Childs was left in the middle of the road not breathing and with a broken leg after being run down. Instead of checking to see if he was all right, Rashid drove off.

Oldham Street Angel Christopher Molden (60) found Mr Childs unconscious and got him breathing, then her and other street patrol members kept him warm and protected until an ambulance arrived.

Rashid, who had a clean driving licence until that point, will face disqualification from working as a driver for a short period, and was fined £200 with £105 costs and seven points on his licence..

Rebecca Romey, defending, said Rashid had panicked when he saw Childs, who had been drinking, hit his car: “There were a large number of people out drinking. In the heat of the moment he was concerned what might happen if he got out.”
