PLANS . . . the Satellite Centre in Greenfield, could reopen for community use
GREENFIELD’S popular community centre could reopen. The Satellite Centre, in Wellington Road, closed in March following the transfer of Oldham Council’s youth club services to Mahdlo in Oldham.
Now Saddleworth Parish Council wants to bring the building back into use for community activities operated by a community consortium. Ownership would rest with the parish council if owners Oldham Council can be persuaded to transfer the title.
The club would be self-financing, from funds raised from lettings. Future use will focus on youth and children’s activities, though all age groups will have access.
A spokesman for Greenfield and Grasscroft Residents’ Association, said: “This is a sound business proposal, with the community’s interest at heart.”
One of the organisations interested in the centre is Uppermill FC, which runs 22 junior teams and five open-age teams.
Chairman Dave Clinton said: “We have been without a clubhouse through most of this season and we are looking into establish a sporting base at the centre. Any other groups interested in providing community services should join our bid.”
