Bow and arrow man cleared by court

A MAN caught with a bow, arrows and a “Rambo” hunting knife walked free yesterday after it was revealed he was only trying to sell the items on eBay.
David Cooper (34), of Tanhill Lane, Oldham was charged with possession of an offensive weapon, namely a crossbow, and possession of a hunting knife.
He was caught by police officers carrying the items on Henshaw Street, Oldham on February 10, this year at 11.15pm and was arrested.
However, it was revealed at Oldham Magistrates Court yesterday that the bow was in fact a “junior compound bow” which is not considered an offensive weapon.
Mr Cooper referred to the bow as “a big boy’s toy” which he had only ever used once — to shoot targets on a farm.
The charge of possessing an offensive weapon was dropped.
The knife was a piece of “memorabilia”, of the film “Rambo” and was in a sheath in Mr Cooper’s rucksack when he was arrested.
The court also heard that Mr Cooper was transporting the items to his friend’s house, on Raleigh Close, who was going to help him sell them on eBay.
Mr Cooper said: “I thought it would be safer for myself and others if I did it at that time of night.”
He was found not guilty of the offence as he had good reason.
Mr Cooper was also caught with cannabis on arrest and was given a 12-month conditional discharge. He must also pay £140 in costs and charges.
