People power cleaning blitz

Date published: 09 June 2015

PEOPLE power helped to shift 10 tonnes of rubbish from the streets of Clarksfield and Glodwick in only six hours.

More than 100 residents and ward councillors took part in the community day of action, which was backed by nine mosques.

Councillor Barbara Brownridge, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and co-operatives, said: “Cleaning up our streets costs the local authority and council taxpayers around £1 million each year, so community clean-ups like this not only help improve the area but also save money.

“This initiative is a good example of residents working together, improving their neighbourhoods and showing they love where they live. It is good to know so many young people were involved as well.

“The vast majority of people across the borough take pride in their communities and keep them clean and tidy.

“But, unfortunately, there is always a small minority who continue to think they can just dump waste and leave others to clear up the mess.”
