LOBSTERS at the ready: unoffial walk organisers Jason and Angie Brown
A committed fund-raising brother and sister will be keeping memories of Saddleworth’s legendary beer walk alive this weekend.
And ironically their “unofficial” walk will be aimed at supporting Saddleworth Round Table, which had to scrap its original beer walk because of problems.
Headed by Justin Brown and his sister Angie, a team of beer walk stalwarts will make their 11-mile trek around key Saddleworth villages on Saturday.
Now in its fourth year, the event has built on the strengths of loyal fans determined to keep the spirit of the original colourful community event alive.
The enthusiastic pair are encouraging other locals on Facebook to join in, building on the success of the previous three walks. Last year more than 80 people in fancy dress took part in the good-natured cross-village ramble.
And Justin (46), a joiner from Delph, said: “The original beer walk raised tens of thousands of pounds for local charities over the years. Saddleworth Round Table plough all their efforts into the community, so this year we decided to celebrate their magnificent charity efforts by supporting them.”
Justin and Angie’s team will be dressed as lobsters for the event: “We like to give passers-by a laugh,” Justin said.
