Burger queen Jodie lands a plumb job

AN AMBITIOUS young mum who swopped flipping burgers for fitting bathrooms is leading a campaign to launch part-time courses at Oldham College.

Jodie Walvin, from Failsworth, is the perfect example of how a flexible course at the town-centre college can put others on the right track to employment.

With a seven-month-old daughter to support, she was working full-time in McDonalds, but took a leaf out of her plumber dad’s books and signed up for a course.

Now she has completed her NVQ Level 2 plumbing technical certificate.

Jodie (22) is now urging others to go along to an open day at the college tomorrow that aims to showcase over 170 part-time courses being launched for adult learners and college leavers.

She said: “I’ve nearly finished my NVQ Level 3 and ACS in gas.

“The flexibility of the course has been particularly good as I have a young baby to look after.

“So now when I am not changing nappies, I’m fitting new bathrooms.

“It has without doubt been rewarding, I’ve made some new friends and was surprised to find that although it’s a traditionally male trade, everyone on the course treated me the same.”

Jodie now works for her dad’s company, getting on-the-job experience for four days and spending a day in college.
