Olympic dreams: Abney Orchestra put in practice at a performance in Waterhead
WHEN Rachael Doyle started up an informal group of musicians it was a way of filling a void after university.
Never could she have imagined that they would go on to form part of the build-up to the Olympic Games in 2012.
The 29-year-old music teacher used to perform frequently with the Oldham Youth Orchestra, but set up the Abney orchestra seven years ago after finishing her degree.
Meeting at the Abney United Reform Church in Mossley, the voluntary group, specifically for the inexperienced, has since grown to over 40 members.
The orchestra has now been selected to perform a specially-commissioned show as part of the Cultural Olympiad build-up to the games.
They’re one of only two groups in the North-West, the other being the Halle, who will form part of Music Nation — a spectacular weekend of live music.
Rachael, of Huddersfield Road, Mossley, said: “I never in my wildest dream thought I would be a conductor or that it would grow to what it has.
“The deadline for application was New Year’s Eve and I remember sitting in a car park and frantically putting the finishing touches to it.
“When we found out we were taking part we were amazed, it’s really fantastic to be chosen and the event itself is going to be brilliant.”
The orchestra, which draws members from Oldham and Saddleworth, will perform at the George Lawton Hall in Mossley in March, 2012.
Poignant and original, the show will chart the historic past of the mills in the local area.
Leader Rachael has also set up and adult and youth choir who will perform alongside for a rousing effect.
She added: “We’ve been speaking to locals gaining pictures and stories of the mills from across the decades.”
Choir practice sessions are held every Tuesday evening, while those wanting to join the orchestra must be able to play an instrument to join in the Friday evening sessions.
