TORRENTIAL rain caused the death of a 21-year-old man on the M62.

Dominic Stuart Begg, from Bolton, lost control of his Renault Clio after skidding on the wet road surface of the slip road at junction 20 for Oldham.

Fire crews from Rochdale and Heywood raced to the scene at around 3.25pm, to find the car had crashed into a lamppost on the hard shoulder.

Firefighters worked frantically to extract the man, cutting him from the wreckage, however he had suffered multiple serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The crash forced drivers to find alternative routes as the slip road and main carriageway were closed until 10pm.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash on the Manchester-bound carriageway, close to the A627.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact 0161-856 8473.
