The Charity Commission’s decision did get a welcome - from Failsworth Residents’ Action Group (FRAG).

And the group says it will continue to defend the memorial ground against any redevelopment.

Chairman Alan Shaw said the group was grateful that the Charity Commission has ruled against the land swap — and warned Oldham Council not to pursue it further.

He said: “We have always believed that no development should be granted as this land was provided by the Failsworth War Memorial Committee to be used by the residents of the Failsworth in the lower ward for recreational purposes only.

“Should Oldham Council not accept this decision of the Charity Commission, Failsworth Residents’ Action Group would continue to vigorously defend the use of the land for which it was intended.”
