Pensioners targeted in their home
Date published: 02 February 2011
AN elderly couple were burgled by a man who walked into their home in Hollins.
He stole a small amount of cash after entering the house in Wolverton Avenue through the back door sometime between noon and 1pm on Monday.
The stranger initially spoke to a woman but was asked to leave by her 86-year-old husband.
He then returned claiming that two men were upstairs, and was again told to leave. The couple did not find anyone else in the house.
Detective Constable Kate Carnally said: “This man has preyed on an elderly couple but they were not easy to confuse and quickly showed him the door.
“We are now investigating this incident and are keen to catch this person.
“Advice to avoid becoming a victim of this kind of crime is to keep doors and windows locked.
“Before opening the door, stop and ask yourself whether you are expecting anyone.
“Make sure the door chain is on and check the caller’s identity.
“A genuine caller will not mind waiting while you verify their details. If you are in doubt, do not open the door.”
