ALEX Carter, the popular Oldham College student who died suddenly, is thought to have suffered several blood clots.
The family has been told that the 17-year-old had five clots that led to him collapsing at his home last Friday morning. He suffered three in his lungs, one in his heart and one in his leg.
His sister Gemma said Alex had undergone surgery to repair cartilage on his left knee about six weeks ago, after suffering a rugby injury.
They say tests are now being carried out to see whether the clots are linked to the surgery.
An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.
