A FORMER Saddleworth School pupil is hoping to conjure up some movie magic by shooting his very own feature film.

James Pugh (19) is one of a crop of enthusiastic students at the University of Central Lancashire taking on the challenge to create a groundbreaking 90-minute film as part of their studies.

The second-year student, who has taken on the role of production manager, said the team is fighting to steer clear of the “student film” stereotype by producing a hard-hitting masterpiece entitled “Needle in the Hay”.

He said: “When people hear student film everyone thinks of low-quality acting and it not being very professional.

“We are doing this as professionally as possible, with lighting, writers, directors and a camera crew.

“It’s really exciting, I’ve dreamed about making something like this and to do it so young seems unreal.”

James, of Clough Lane, Grasscroft, is helping lead a team of 40 cast and crew and has been trying to gain sponsorship from local businesses.

The film goes into production on Valentine’s Day, with plans to have the finished article ready for screenings at cinemas in Preston and Manchester by May.

The film follows the main character Sam Case, whose life has been rocked by the suicide of his best friend.

Interweaving stories then explore young people’s feelings towards homosexuality, family relationships, love and happiness.

Making the leap from film fanatic to movie maker is one James has relished.

He said: “Film is escapism and all different types of people can relate to it. If someone can relate to at least one character and take something from it, well that’s a film-maker’s dream.”

He hopes the project, in light of the recent tuition fee protests, will help to portray students in a positive light.

He said: “We’re calling up people and asking for sponsorship money and at the same time people are seeing a small minority in violent protests. We’re working extremely hard to get this film made, and there are a lot of students out there like that.”
