SHAW could be in danger of becoming a “takeaway centre” if more planning applications for food stores are granted according to a local councillor.

Councillor Mark Alcock hit out at a planning application to change the use of a shop to a hot food takeaway in Milnrow Road.

At a meeting last night, councillors on the Shaw and Crompton Parish Council voiced their concerns over the number of takeaways in and around the centre.

Councillor David Murphy said: “How many do we need? Personally I believe there are too many.”

Plans are for the store to be open between 10am and 1am Monday to Thursday, 10am to 2.30am on Fridays and Saturdays and 4pm to 1am on Sundays.

Councillor Mark Alcock said: “It could end up like Yorkshire Street, with Shaw being a takeaway centre.”

However councillor Simon Farrell was in favour of the change and said: “It’s a commercial business and if there wasn’t the need for it they would not stay open.

“The more shops we can keep with something in them the better.” The council voted to recommend refusal for the project on the grounds that it would harm the viability and vitality of the district centre.
