A FATHER and son dream team from Saddleworth will ensure the good work of Oldham charity Rathbone will continue to transform the lives of troubled teenagers.

Phil Carey (60) has spent much of his life training, mentoring and finding work placements for local youngsters who have experienced problems at home or school.

Now the dedicated worker has been joined by 21-year-old son Alex, showing that charity really does start at home.

Alex, a media and TV production graduate, will work as a media intern and aims to publicise the life-changing work done at the charity’s Union Street base and highlight a positive image of today’s youth.

His past experience includes helping to train the Great Britain rugby league team overcome interview nerves before an Australian tour.

Taking on such a task should stand him in good stead for the work ahead.

He said: “I wanted to work at Rathbone because my dad enjoys it so much and their commitment to young people means they’ll support me all they can.

“I’ve also never experienced the hardship some of the Rathbone trainees have.”

He will follow in the footsteps of dad Phil, who has struggled through recent harsh economic times to find employment for Oldham’s young people at businesses such as Argos and Matalan.

Phil said: “The types of young people we work with make great employees.

“They are loyal and enthusiastic and companies are able to mould them into the staff they want them to be.”
