CHAMPION volunteer . . . Bernard Edge
FORMER Pride in Oldham winner and one of the borough’s most committed voluntary workers, Bernard Edge, has died.
The popular Chadderton man, who was 78, scooped the voluntary award in the 2004 Pride in Oldham awards for his tireless efforts on behalf of the town.
Heralded by judges as a pillar of the Chadderton community, it was widely recognised that without his drive and dedication, hundreds of events might never have happened.
The grandfather was a former president and life member of Chadderton Amateur Swimming Club, which he joined in 1953, and he received a special award from Oldham Sports Council for his efforts.
And as chairman of Baretrees Residents’ Association, he was chief organiser of a myriad of events, bingo sessions, social evenings and trips out.
Mr Edge was an honorary member of Chadderton Historical Society, and campaigned tirelessly for many local causes, including the protection of the art deco baths, and a successful drive to add a line to Chadderton war memorial to honour people who have died in all wars and conflicts.
Secretary Michael Lawson said: “Bernard was a staunch Chaddertonian and a lot of people will miss him.
“He was one of the old brigade, he put people and the community first, and was a great campaigner for and supporter of the community in general.”
Mr Edge’s son, Eddie, who was brought up in Chadderton but now lives in Carlisle with his family, said: “As a family we are so very proud of what he achieved and what he stood for.”
Mr Edge died last Tuesday after a long fight against cancer.
He outlived his wife Joyce, and leaves behind a son, Eddie, daughter-in-law Vikki and grandson James.
His funeral is on January 6 at St Mark’s Church, Chadderton, at 1pm, followed by committal at Oldham Crematorium at 2pm.
